Having the ability to see things from the perspective of other people is an advantage in life. Being empathetic helps build relationships, both personal and professional and this is a skill that will still be valued as the world continues to change. All schools should, and do, value empathy but Fettes Prep is perhaps unique in deliberately encouraging this skill through changing the way lessons are taught. All Fettes Prep departments are actively looking to find ways to encourage children to empathise with others, for example by selecting the right texts, poems, periods of history or case studies, or by encouraging children to give constructive feedback to others. At Fettes Prep, empathy is being deliberately taught, assessed, fed back on and tracked, giving children an advantage in a fast-changing world. This approach was featured in a Sunday Times article in April 2024 when Fettes Prep was described as “The school that puts kindness at the core of its curriculum.”

A gentle, kind and loving dog, Fidra - a Cockapoo - is a qualified Therapet and supports our students in a number of ways including helping in the medical centre; helping with anxiety; available for walks in our grounds and helping to teach students about caring for animals and overcoming fear.

Our Pastoral Care is sector-leading and central to our supportive community of students and staff. Our Tutor and House structures are at the core and, as well as the strong bonds made with fellow class- and housemates, it is the commitment and dedication of Tutors, Houseparents, their Assistants and Matrons which leave a lasting impression.

All staff at Fettes Prep School advise, help and encourage, and are simply there for the students whenever needed. We are committed to all aspects of student wellbeing from healthy eating and physical activity to mental health. By prioritising this, each of our pupils can thrive and embrace all that a Fettes education has to offer whilst making friends for life.

At Fettes Prep we help our pupils gain the skills to thrive. Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education) gives us an opportunity to deliver a programme of learning through which our children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives. PSHE is taught under the umbrella of three main strands: Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World.

The school seeks to support the physical, emotional and social wellbeing of every member of our community. We aim to provide all pupils with an appreciation and understanding of issues that they may experience now or in the future. We offer opportunities for them to develop key attributes such as: resilience; resourcefulness; relationships;  decision making; risk assessment; communication skills and strategies for coping.
