Our 1st and 2nd Form pupils have spent the last term learning all about filmmaking and have produced their own films which are currently being screened at the Fettes Film Festival, an online showcase of their impressive work.

Many of the pupils worked with each other from their own homes, and others met socially distanced in outdoor locations to produce their projects.

As part of the learning process, we were joined by two industry professionals. Helen Bunker, who creates special effects for TV and film, gave us great advice and made suggestions for the incorporation of simple special effects. We also had input from Ed Boase, Director of The Young Film Academy.

All the pupils benefitted from an online course run by the Young Film Academy that covered subjects as diverse as film history, editing, fight choreography and camera angles. We learnt so much about storytelling and directing and put this to use for our own projects.

The films selected for the festival demonstrated a variety of techniques and the pupils had clearly listened to all the advice they were given, producing pieces that were atmospheric, humorous, and sophisticated.

Helen and Ed were guest judges for the festival and were absolutely delighted with the output. They were particularly impressed with the use of locations, camera angles and storytelling and those films that include character development came in for special praise.

We have learnt so much from this experience and whilst we are unable to perform in person, we will continue to build our filmmaking skills during Drama lessons and as an extracurricular activity.
