On 9th Dec 2023 Fettes College welcomed rowers from across the country when we hosted the Scottish Indoor Finals for the first time. The day was an absolute success, with every age category being strongly contested by an array of schools.

Fettes students had their most successful year of racing since we began, securing 5 individual medals and a further 6 medals in the team events: [3 gold, 3 Silver, 5 Bronze].

Individual:

  1. Patrick P – Bronze in S2 Boys
  2. Maverick R – Gold in S4 Boys (adaptive)
  3. Clemmie P – Bronze in S4 Girls
  4. Fergus P – Gold in S6 Boys
  5. Freddie D – Bronze in S6 Boys

Team:

  1. S2 Boys 1000m Relay – Silver
  2. S3 Girls 1000m Relay – Bronze
  3. S4 Girls 2000m Relay – Silver
  4. S5 Girls 2000m Relay – Bronze
  5. S6 Girls 2000m Relay – Silver
  6. S6 Boys 2000m Relay – Gold

Just as important as the medals was the impressive commitment shown by every student in their individual races. We saw 16 new ‘Personal Bests’ being set by the Fettes rowers over the day, as an indication of the effort being given. At the end of the day, we were delighted to secure 1 last further Gold medal, in the inaugural ‘Teachers Race’. With 15 of our staff from all branches of the Fettes community taking part, our very own S&C Coach Dave Allan pulled his way to victory with a monstrous 982m row in 3mins.

One of the many ‘firsts’ on a terrific days was in welcoming Cargilfield Prep School, who’s Senior year-group is old enough to participate. We hope to see many more Prep Schools invovled in the coming years.

We were also delighted to welcome back Katherine Douglas, (OF) who left us in 2007 and went on to row in the GB Women’s 8 at the Tokyo Olympics. Having Katherine back at the school, was a real inspiration to the students and a lovely touch to complete a fantastic day.
