The Middle School Play Festival is a house competition in which our 3rd and 4th Form perform short plays that have been directed by members of the L6th.

This year, the Lower 6th directors from combined houses were given the science fiction/horror stories of HP Lovecraft to creatively adapt into a 10-minute piece of live theatre, in 10 days. The four combined brother sister houses rose to the challenge with imagination, energy, and artistic flair, setting and finding their own rehearsal times.

The final performances captured the horror theme perfectly in their own original and inventive ways. The audience were entertained by superb use of ensemble actors, haunting original music, fabulous costumes, excellent physical theatre, effective staging, and entrancing jellyfish.

Our external adjudicator this year was Mrs Kate Macsween, a teacher of English and Drama, who writes and acts in her own Monologue Plays for Fringe Theatre, thoroughly enjoyed every performance and was very impressed by the great variety of theatre skills. She awarded The Butler Bowl for the Middle School Play Festival 2023 to Carrington and College West for their excellent and enthralling adaptation of ‘From Beyond’.
