On Sunday 12th June Fettes College hosted the 2022 CCF Scottish Schools Pipe Band and Highland Dance Championships, having previously hosted the competition in 2011.

Families and friends of participants from eight schools across Scotland enjoyed a feast of excellent solo piping and drumming, two pipe band competitions, and  a colourful array of Highland Dancers competing in the Drama Theatre. The day finished with a splendid Massed Bands parade on the Head’s Lawn.

Competition judges closely watched, listened to and adjudicated every piece of music played and every step danced; the air of celebration was as strong as the sense of competition throughout the day, especially given the challenges of holding competitions over the past two years.

In thanking all who took part in the competition and to those who contributed to the success of the event Helen Harrison, Head, said “It was an absolute joy to welcome so many people back to Fettes again to celebrate this flagship event for all the schools involved, and to enjoy the talent shown by our young pipers, drummers, dancers and drum majors. They are all to be congratulated, not just for their amazing performances but for their hard work and dedication in practising and honing their skills.”

Congratulations go to all who represented Fettes College in the competition. The Pipe Band, resplendent in their appearance and performances, did exceptionally well coming second in the Confined Pipe Band category. Third Form student Amelia M produced a number of very fine performances in the Highland Dancing events, picking up three 2nd places, a fourth place and two fifth paces in the intermediate category. Pipers Fiona C, William M, Ramsey F and Charlie D each produced excellent and mature performances in their respective categories and Ram S, Carrick L and Samuel J displayed composure and professionalism in their individual drumming events.

Our thanks go to Mr Drummond, Mr Henderson, Mr Walker and Ms Staub for their instruction, inspiration and expertise in developing the skills of our truly talented Pipers and Drummers and in all their preparation for this competition.

Well done to all!
