World Book Day 2021

During these difficult times reading has been especially important as a means of travel, escape, inspiration, and relaxation. We are great book lovers at Fettes Prep, and we didn’t want to limit our celebrations solely to the 4th March, so we decided to champion the power of the written word with a week of fun competitions and activities.

Our week started with a spine poetry challenge; staff submitted their poems and we asked pupils to match the stacks of book poetry with each teacher. House points were awarded for joining in the challenge and prizes for year group winners.

On Tuesday we enjoyed a Book Day inspired assembly, including a reading of Dr Suess’ ‘I Can Read with my Eyes Shut’. The assembly ended with a competition consisting of five-word clues to the books that the pupils had to use to guess some of their favourite stories and the wonderful characters that they feature.

For World Book Day itself, we ran a treasure hunt, releasing clues each hour which included fact finding and fun challenges. We also tasked our boarders and pupils in school to create 3D book sculptures which many, including Hamish and Lewis, did to great effect. During today’s English lessons we enjoyed re-creating our favourite book covers.
