We've had a terrific few weeks of sport with our pupils involved in the usual regular fixtures as well as additional competitions for cross country, football, hockey, netball, swimming and skiing!
See below for a few more details.
Scottish Schools’ Netball Cup
The Fettes netballers set off in high spirits to Strathaven Academy for their semi-final match in the Scottish Schools’ Cup. This is the first time that we have entered the competition and reaching the semi-final has given us the opportunity not only to play more netball, but to meet other players from teams we would not usually compete against, which has been such an exciting experience.
After our arrival and a quick warm up we managed to get the better start, scoring 3 quick goals. There followed quite a few turnovers whilst both teams dealt with early nerves. However, Fettes settled more quickly and applied determined defensive pressure which resulted in a strong lead by half time. Strathaven kept fighting back and never gave up.
The score certainly did not reflect how competitive the semi-final was. The final score was a win to Fettes 30 -3
Scottish Prep Schools Cross-Country Championships
A team of 37 boys and girls took part in the Scottish Schools Invitational Cross Country Championships at John Muir Country Park on Sunday afternoon, joining around 300 other pupils from a total of twelve schools. The afternoon was dry, but windy and wet underfoot, in other words, the ‘perfect’ cross country conditions! Up first were the Under 9 girls who set the Fettes Prep team off to a good start, with the top four runners coming in 4th (Lucy), 10th (Jess), 11th (Eliza) and 19th (Annabelle). The Under 9 boys were next to compete and Cian,Hugo and George posted impressive runs to finish in 2nd and 3rd and 7th respectively.
It was then the turn of the Under 11 girls and boys. Notable individual achievements were Charlie in 2nd place and Jonty in 9th in the Under 11 boys team and Kitty in 10th running for the Under 11 girls.
At Under 13 level, Dashka romped home in first place with a new record (having come 3rd the day before in the Scottish Club Championships in 1500m). She was followed by Izzy finishing 8th and Marianna 9th. The Under 13 boys run was a real team effort; Rory placed 9th, Gregoire 11th, George 16th and Seth 29th.
At the medal ceremony our four podium finishers received their medals and we achieved some impressive results in the team competition with the Under 9 girls coming 1st, the Under 9 and 11 boys 2nd and the Under 13 boys 3rd. Well done to all the runners, no matter where you came, you all contributed to your team’s results and we are extremely proud of your commitment, dedication, and giving your very best to represent Fettes Prep!
IAPS Qualifier Swimming Competition
After a long bus journey, the Under 12 and Under 13 teams arrived in Newcastle for the IAPS Qualifier swim meet. We decided to have lunch at Kingston Park (Newcastle Falcons ground) and managed to get a quick tour of the stadium, including some touch rugby on the hallowed turf, a good warm up before our arrival at RGS Newcastle!
All the Fettes swimmers excelled in their events and represented Fettes impeccably. We now wait to see if they achieved the qualifying times for the finals in London, which take place in June.
Under 11 Football Tournament
What an afternoon of football!
Six teams from around Edinburgh came to Westwoods to enjoy a round-robin tournament. There was some spectacular football was on display throughout the afternoon, including very skilful goals scored by all teams. It was very competitive and the team spirit and sportsmanship throughout was a delight to see. Edinburgh Academy eventually won the tournament with Flora Stevenson Primary taking second place and Fettes coming in third.
Scottish Prep Schools Ski Championships
After 2 days of glorious ‘European’ skiing conditions at Glenshee, we were back to rather more typical conditions for the Scottish Prep Schools Ski Championships on Friday! Our team of seven were brilliantly positive throughout the day, despite the challenging weather.
On arrival, our instructor, Rob ran through some warm ups with the team and completed the course inspection, while Mrs Fletcher and Miss MacPherson took up their positions for the race. During the first run it was tricky to see the gates, but regardless, all of our racers got times on the clock. The second run was fortunately a little clearer and many of the team improved their times. Despite the less than ideal conditions our competitors enjoyed a ‘free ski’ in the afternoon before the medal presentation. Congratulations to Angus and Archie who took silver and bronze medals in the individual Under 11 competition and to the Under 13 boys who finished 5th in the team event. All the racers achieved impressive times despite the conditions! Thank you to the organisers of the event and to our wonderful coach driver who got us home safe and well through some snowy conditions!
Congratulations to Rory, Finlay, Hamish and Victor, who have been chosen to represent the Saltires Hockey Team. Well done Ava, Imogen, Isabella, Megan, Nicole, Nyasha and Selena for their selection to play for the Saltires Netball Team at the Under 13 Scottish IAPS Netball tournament.
