Prep School December Round Up

What a fantastic few weeks we have had to finish off a wonderful Autumn Term.

The days may have gradually become shorter, but we've made the most of each and every one, packing in some fantastic community events including memorable concerts, the M and P Form play, Christmas jumper day and more! To add to the festive spirit, snow arrived a few days ago and with it some December mists. We've wrapped up warm and enjoyed every minute of each other's company. Read on to find out more.

Favourite Jumper Day

We wore our favourite jumpers, with lots of seasonal colours and themes on display, to raise funds for Save The Children. The snow had begun to fall before breaktime and there was a chill in the air as well as plenty of excitement. We were wrapped up warm and delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to this brilliant charity.

Christmas Parties

Our Christmas parties are much loved occasions where we all have the chance to sing, dance, play and have fun.

Christmas Dinner

Our Christmas Dinner was a joyful occasion. We were treated to a wonderful meal by the amazing catering team, including the very popular chocolate bombs which exploded on the table to reveal sweets! We pulled crackers, wore our hats, told jokes and talked about plans for the break ahead.

Autumn Concert

It was joyful to gather again in the Fettes Theatre for a proper Autumn Concert after a rather long time away! Our young musicians rose to the occasion beautifully, buoyed up by a large appreciative audience!

The children shone from the beginning to the very end of the concert, demonstrating talent, confidence, real versatility, team work and lovely joie de vivre in performance!

The range of styles and genres in the mix was breath taking, from traditional Pipes & Drums, improvised solos from Jazz Band players, a Calypso from Jordan Singers, West African Drumming, a haunting folk song from String Group to the Orchestra playing a Mozart Masterpiece and a 4-voice part dramatic ballad from Australia delivered with gusto by the Gallery Choir to end with. Our soloists for the evening played beautifully with real poise and deliberation.

Royal Regiment of Scotland Band Visit and ABF The Soldiers' Charity - Rehearsal and Canongate Service

On 24th November a buzz of excitement rippled around the Prep School in anticipation of the arrival of the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. 12 Musicians took their places ready to rehearse with our Chamber Choir singers in preparation for the Armed Forces’ Carol Service at Canongate Kirk in December. The rich sonorous wash of brass blended beautifully with the bright youthful voices of the children. The Band then performed an entertaining and engaging concert for all Prep School children, introducing the different brass instruments and sending us all on our way with a spring in our step to some lively Christmas classics!

The day of the Service finally arrived; last-minute rehearsals preceded a short journey to Canongate as we took our places ready for the Service.

The Band musicians were resplendent in formal military uniform with instruments polished and sounding glorious in the wonderful acoustic of the Kirk.

A beautiful, dignified service followed. The children sang their hearts out with clarity and conviction, their rendition of ‘The Angel Choir and the Trumpeter’ with solo piccolo trumpet a beautiful highlight. Our Fettes Choral Society gave a strong, arresting performance of ‘O Holy Night’, augmented by brass and organ and we all left feeling uplifted and inspired from being part of a very special service.

M and P Forms' Christmas Play

In what was a wonderfully collaborative Christmas production, M and P Form pupils worked with passion, creativity and insight over the Autumn Term. They created characters, developed ad-libs and suggested many fabulous ideas to enhance their performance of ‘Hooray in A Manger’.

T Form pupils were busily making puppets for their curriculum Drama project, and the cast were thrilled to be able to use these alongside the larger puppets featured, all of which were handmade by parents, students and staff. A team of parents, staff and pupils helped with costumes and choreography, whilst the 1st and 2nd Form techie team added their growing expertise in sound, lighting and make-up.
