Third Form Ancient Olympics

On Friday, 3rd October, the Classics Department brought the spirit of the Ancient Games to life by hosting an Ancient Olympics Day for all Third Form students. Pupils gathered in their teams, proudly wearing their coloured t-shirts, and opened the day with the athletes’ oath around our Fettes Ancient Olympics flag, led by Prefects Alice N and Rory W.

The morning was dedicated to trying out a range of traditional events from the Ancient Games, including the 'stadion' footrace (192.28m), the ‘race in armour’ (recreated in true Fettes fashion with full cricket kit) long jumping with weights, discus, and javelin. After plenty of practice, students then competed in the athletic contests, ensuring everyone took part in at least one discipline. Congratulations to the winners of the prestigious ‘stadion’ race – Ethan Y (KI) and Jess S (AR).

In the afternoon, the Games were placed in their historical context through interactive classroom-based sessions, delivered by the Classics Department. Winners of each athletics event were then honoured with olive-wreath prizes, presented by Arniston Matron and special guest Emily Whitley, Paralympic Gold Medallist. Emily also captivated the students with stories of her experiences as a Paralympic swimmer at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Games, offering an inspiring perspective on resilience and achievement.

The day concluded on a high note with a celebratory Greek Feast, prepared by our wonderful Catering Department – a fitting end to a day that was educational, energetic, and thoroughly enjoyable.
