Music is an Art; it is a science and it is a language, add to that a stunning city centre location and over 150 Fettes musicians, then, you’ve a recipe for a fantastic multi-sensory experience - that was our wonderful  Spring Concert held in St. Cuthbert’s Church. From the individual performances from the winners of our Instrumental and Piano Competition, Jacqueline Y, Matthew J,  Emilia A. and Edward L demonstrated great skill and technical control . We were treated to some stylish chamber performances from an instrumental Trio playing ‘Serenade’ by Bonis,  a group of Upper Sixth presented ‘Merry-go-round of Life’ and the Flute Group, fresh off the back of their win at the Edinburgh Competition Festival, delivered a dazzling rendition of Saint-Saens Danse Macabre.

The Jazz Ensemble gave a classy rendition of ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams and the Pipe Band added their brand of music brilliance with two engaging sets. The Chapel Choir sang two modern pieces – the final movement of Elaine Hagenburg’s ‘Illuminare’ and ‘A Million Dreams’ from The Greatest Showman.

The Orchestra, who opened the concert, began with ‘Centuria’ a celebratory March originally written for Wind Band, proved that good music can work when transcribed for orchestra, then played Ennio Morricone’s moving signature tune from ‘Cinema Paradiso’. The last group to perform was the Concert Choir – whose contribution began with Fleetwood Mac’s infectious grooves in ‘Everywhere’ which served as the perfect prelude to the final item,  Wake me up (when it’s all over)! by the Swedish DJ, Avicii, which was given the full Fettes treatment: Choir, concert orchestra, organ, piano, rhythm section, and the Pipe Band – and audience participation  – making it a truly special and memorable occasion.
