Spring Concert
Our Spring Concert, held in St Cuthbert's Church on Friday evening, began with the Pipe Band, gearing up for their New York trip in April, with a fabulous set of tunes: America, the Beautiful, The Marines’ Hymn, Anchors Aweigh and When the Saints go Marching in.
Then the Orchestra gave a performance of Sir William Walton’s ‘Crown Imperial’ showing-off the powerful Fettes brass and versatile Strings and woodwind sections. The two winners of our Piano Competition earlier this term, Mathew J and Cicy C, played Columbine Dances (Martinů) and Caballos Españoles (Korn), and showed great skill at the keyboard!
In keeping with the ‘NYC’ theme, the Jazz Band gave a rendition of Billy Joel’s ‘New York State of Mind’, with plenty East side swagger and swing. What followed was a little unusual – three pianists, six hands and one piano – in a performance of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Romance for Six Hands: very well executed and stylishly delivered by Cicy C, Nick G and Koki N.
Some choral offerings from our Chapel Choir made the most of the generous acoustics of St Cuthbert’s as they sang in six-parts ‘Beati quorum via’ by Standford in true a cappella style, then continued the global theme with two songs: Ahrirang (a Korean folk-song) and Shule Aroon (Irish Gaelic).
The grand finale was Never Forget by Take That which included all of the evening’s performers (joined by some members of staff) in a Fettes first! The audience were also able to join in with a rendition of ‘We Will Rock You’ that formed part of the closing section before an encore brought this terrific concert to a close.
