We are delighted to have received Silver Reading School accreditation from Scottish Book Trust.

Launched in Oct 2024, as part of the Fettes Moving Forward school vision, the initiative to encourage and strengthen reading for pleasure across the whole Fettes Community has been championed by Teacher of English Lizzie Palmer.

 Key to the success of this initiative is the introduction of the Reading Ambassadors Scheme which sees 30 student ambassadors of all ages taking the lead in promoting reading for pleasure in and out of house, organising events and sharing recommendations to help make reading a visible and valued part of daily life at Fettes.

 Reading is embedded into all aspects of school life, both academic and in houses. Houses have reading displays, book clubs and a wide selection of books available to read for pleasure. Many subjects have wider reading embedded into their curriculum and interdisciplinary projects. All staff have been encouraged to display what they are currently reading on their classroom or office doors, sparking conversations and demonstrating that reading is a shared passion across the whole school community.

I am proud of this significant shift in culture that has sparked conversations about books and stories amongst students and staff.  It has certainly encouraged me to read far more and for that I am very grateful!”
