Piano Competition Final

The final of the Piano Competition is always a very special evening, and this year’s – held on Friday evening – was no exception.

Jesslyn C, Varvara S, Davina H and Hector W performed in the Intermediate Class, with a wonderful variety of music, ranging from Chopin and Rachmaninov to the jazz of Oscar Peterson.

In the senior Class, Oscar B, Elsa M, Larry W and Risako T gave brilliant performances of music including Chopin’s third Ballade, Schubert’s Impromptu in G flat, more Chopin (the Nocturne in C sharp minor), and the first movement of Beethoven’s Tempest sonata.

The standard throughout the evening was truly outstanding, and our terrific adjudicator, Marilyn Boulton, had the very difficult job to do of choosing winners.  After much deliberation, Varvara won the Intermediate Class, with Hector taking the Highly Commended.  Risako emerged victorious in the Senior class, and Larry was awarded the Highly Commended.

The evening was a real celebration of the piano, and what our young pianists can do, and our warm congratulations go to them all.
