Oxford University News

As our Upper 6th Form students prepare to embark on life after Fettes, two of our students are particularly excited after gaining offers to study at the University of Oxford.

Massive congratulations to Eliza D (left) for being offered a place to study Classics & French at Christchurch and Sophie H (right) for being offered a place to study Biology at New College.

We spoke to them both after they received their offers, Eliza told us a little bit more about why she chose Oxford:

“I chose to apply to Oxford due to the personal appeal of the joint honours course with Classics and French, as I want to continue studying the two subjects that I have enjoyed the most during my time at Fettes. Studying in the city of Oxford itself also appealed to me, especially because of its Ashmolean Museum, where I have found myself browsing the ancient artefacts every time I have been in Oxford. I also wanted to follow in the footsteps of my mother, one of the greatest inspirations, who studied there when she was my age.

I will miss the enthusiasm and tenacity of all those involved in Fettes’ dedicated support network. The support I have been given throughout my 7 years here, by the teaching and pastoral staff and the close friends I have made, has motivated me to embrace every academic endeavour.”

Sophie explained why she chose to study Biology at Oxford:

“Biology is an incredible subject, one that I have always been captivated by. The course at Oxford is extremely diverse, provides the opportunity to specialise in later years and has a tutorial system which suits my style of learning. Having attended a number of open days I knew that Oxford would be the ideal place for me to have an exciting, fulfilling and rewarding undergraduate experience.”

Sophie also told us:

“I will really miss the Fettes community particularly the sense of camaraderie in the Girls 1st XI hockey and lacrosse teams, as well as Mrs Mill’s fantastic coaching and inspiring team talks.”

Congratulations Sophie and Eliza, we can’t wait to follow your journey!
