Old Fettesians Reunite for Commemoration Weekend

We were thrilled to welcome over 350 Old Fettesians back to Fettes for the Old Fettesian Association Commemoration Weekend 2024!

This memorable weekend saw special reunions for the five-year leavers of 2019 and the decade leavers of 2014, 2004, 1994, and 1984. We were also honoured to host the Newmen of 1964 and 1954, with three celebrating a friendship that began at Fettes 70 years ago!

Our community made extraordinary efforts to return to Edinburgh, travelling not just from across the UK but from places as far as the US, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, Dubai, Portugal, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Italy, and France.

Old Fettesians enjoyed a variety of events, including Friday night reunion drinks at Brewhemia in Edinburgh, a careers lunch with the Sixth Form, House visits, supporting House sports matches, and strolling around the grounds to see what has changed and what remains delightfully familiar.

The evening began with a service in Chapel, led by our Chaplain, Neil McCleery (Staff 2024–present). A thought-provoking address was given by David McDowell (Staff 2005–present), while the reading was given by OFA Committee President Richard Llewellyn (Mo 1987–1992) and Head of School, Laura T. The Chapel Choir treated us to a stirring rendition of the anthem 'Praise to the Lord, the Almighty', by J. Neander & Tr. C. Winkworth. The congregational singing was powerful, as everyone was clearly overjoyed to be back together at Chapel.

Following the Service, a drinks reception and black-tie dinner took place in the Dining Hall, where guests were seated with Old Fettesians from their time at school. The evening featured wonderful hospitality, with speeches from the President of the OFA and the Head, Mrs. Helen Harrison. The highlight of the evening was a performance by our expert pipers from the Pipe Band after a loyal toast. The night was filled with heartfelt reminiscences and long-awaited catch-ups, with some returning to Fettes for the first time since their school days.
