Mid Week Model Making with Classics

Earlier this term our 4th Form GCSE Classical Civilisation class took part in a model making competition as part of their Myth and Religion module.

Divided into teams, our students were provided with a limited selection of materials and tasked with building their very own Greek temples. The race against the clock required them to think carefully about their construction, skilfully incorporating some crucial architectural features: colonnades, pediments, friezes and their very own Opisthodomos (treasury).

This kind of activity is a fantastic way to bring the ancient world to life, allowing our students to appreciate the intricate designs and impressive engineering skills of the ancient Greeks. These newfound skills will help our students recognise the influence that Greek design has had on modern architecture, especially apparent in Edinburgh, the Athens of the North.
