IB Activities Week

Our IB students have had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities this week. All designed to help our students learn and develop new skills which will inspire, motivate and prepare them well for life after Fettes.

Over the course of the week, our students took part in a number of activities covering 4 key areas:

  • Outdoor Education
  • Service Activities
  • Strength & Conditioning/Wellbeing Course
  • UKCC Sports Coaching/Leadership Course

Throughout the week the students participated in a variety of outdoor education activities including rock climbing, fire starting, climbing a Munro, paddling and mountain biking. At Fettes we believe learning outdoors helps our students develop their problem-solving skills, independence, and confidence.

The students also took part in various service activities within our local community, including the FetLor Youth Club. Founded in 1924, FetLor provides a safe environment for the young people in the North of Edinburgh. They receive support and gain life skills through activities and opportunities offered here. Fettes students showed their support by working on a gardening project. They also visited Warriston Cemetery where they cleared a large overgrown area and helped to plant a wildflower meadow.

The students were delighted to have the opportunity to patriciate in a Strength and Conditioning/Wellbeing course. Strength and conditioning at its simplest form is the practical application of sports science to enhance movement quality and develop an understanding of mental and physical wellbeing. This has helped to educate our students on the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle including recovery and nutrition,  whilst having a good understanding of safe exercise techniques and how to structure exercise sessions.

Finally, our students completed the UKCC Sports Coaching/Leadership Course. The UK Coaching courses deliver excellent and inspiring coaching sessions on leadership and practical activities including athletics, cricket, hockey, rugby, touch rugby, tennis and volleyball. Each student learns how to safely lead and plan a sports session, including how to execute a risk assessment. The final goal is to facilitate an intra group sporting tournament, which is planned and delivered by the group.

Well done to all our fantastic IB students who took part and a huge thanks to our amazing Fettes staff who facilitated such a wonderful week.
