Fourth Form Parliamentary Debate
On Tuesday, Chapel was transformed into a slightly more civilised House of Commons for our experimental Fourth Form debate in the British parliamentary format, where a larger number of speakers debate a motion back and forth.
In true House of Commons style, the motion was “This House has no confidence in His Majesty’s Government”: one person from each house spoke as a minister or shadow minister, and to assist with research, he or she also had a parliamentary private secretary.
Siena H-M, as Leader of the Opposition, opened with a knowledgeable catalogue of the government’s failures, to which Prime Minister Marcel L responded eloquently. Other impressive performers were Deputy Bea N, Chancellor Ada E, and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Paddy P. Jane S and Edie M were also very supportive Parliamentary Private Secretaries.
Overall, the government won the debate, defeating the vote of no confidence. Congratulations to them and to all the participants in this new experiment. Many thanks as well to our excellent judges and Madam Speaker.
