Fettes students compete in Durham University Debating Competition

Lower Sixth Form students Ziyad A, Ben L, Geordie M and Alex P gave up the start of their Easter holidays to speak in the Durham University Schools Debating Competition (the biggest residential debating competition in the country) on 23/24 March.   Ziyad and Alex won through to second place in the novice final, a great achievement for people who started debating in the autumn term.

Staying in the Grey College halls of residence, each day the boys took part in debate in the British Parliamentary format.  Speakers were told the motion for debate - and the side they must debate -   just fifteen minutes before each round.  They were required to speak for five minutes, setting out their own side of the case and rebutting their opponents' arguments.

Motions ranged from This house would ban gambling to This house prefers housing assistance programmes to social housing schemes and, in the final, This house, as major gaming companies (eg Sony and Nintendo) would aggressively crack down on the creation and consumption of ROM hacks.  Fortunately, Alex and Ziyad study Computer Science for their IB Diploma and A Level!
