Sixth Form student Fraser C was selected to compete in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), in Rio de Janeiro and become the first student from Scotland to represent Great Britain in either the International Physics Olympiad or the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad in many years. The competition aims to foster interest in astronomy and astrophysics among young people from participating countries and promote the exchange of scientific and cultural knowledge and experiences between nations.
Fraser, who ranked in the top 45% globally, was one of 232 students from 53 countries that took part in the competition, and one of 46 to receive a Bronze medal, and said:
“I had the honour of representing the United Kingdom and meeting high-quality young physicists from around the world was inspiring. The stunning national park scenery, combined with clear skies, created a picturesque background at the Fazenda Ribeirao hotel.
“As the first Scot to participate in IOAA, I particularly enjoyed singing "500 miles" at the cultural evening, where each country shares an element of their culture. I am thankful to Fettes College for supporting me on this life-changing journey.”
Head, Helen Harrison, said: “Fraser being selected for the British team demonstrates his exceptional talent and dedication. We are so proud of all that he has achieved, and he is an inspiration to other young students with aspirations in science or indeed any field.”
