Fettes is awarded Secondary Geography Quality Mark and Centre of excellence status

We are delighted to have been awarded both the Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) and Centre of Excellence Status for the period 2022-25, having previously received it in 2019 for a three-year period.

The SGQM uses a robust framework of evaluation, analysis and reflection on the quality of learning, teaching, leadership and curriculum development across the school’s geography provision.

The submission for this award of excellence is moderated externally and benchmarked against National Standards with only the highest quality submissions being awarded the SGQM and Centre of Excellence status.  Fettes is one of only 15 UK schools to receive this prestigious academic award, and the only school to hold it in Scotland.

Jonathan Marchant, Deputy Head (Academic) says “These accolades are testament to the hard work and commitment of our both our Geography department and our students. The feedback on our submission recognised Fettes as having a clear vision for Geography and its place in the wider curriculum, which shapes the way that the subject is taught and engenders a curiosity and fascination about the world. The Geography department was specifically commended for being a high achieving department with a clear understanding of what our students need to succeed.  Congratulations to Mr Talbot, Acting Head of Geography, and all in the Geography department for this well-deserved award.
