On Tuesday 28th January, the Classics Department were delighted to welcome Professor Judy Barringer from The University of Edinburgh to give this term’s Classics Society Lecture. She spoke on the topic of Ancient Olympia – one which is incredibly familiar to her, having just finished writing a book about the site. She shared her huge wealth of knowledge with us, about the fascinating ancient site, which Fettes pupils will have the opportunity to visit first hand as part of the Classics trip to Greece in October later this year. She gave us a potted history of the site, and discussed its function first and foremost as a religious sanctuary, with an array of photos of the archaeological evidence to really bring her talk to life. She explored the Ancient Olympics Games themselves, and considered the logistics of how 45,000 visitors were accommodated, fed and watered. It was a fascinating insight into this 2,700 year old tradition, and one that is particularly relevant with the Tokyo Olympics coming up this summer.
