Autumn Term Rugby Round Up

Our Autumn Term sees Rugby as the major sport for our boys and although bad weather has hampered some plans, its has been an excellent term to strengthen team bonds and put into practise all the training received.

Whilst the rugby world awaited Japan lighting the fuse to 2019 Rugby World Cup the Fettes College Rugby club were well underway with another exciting and action-packed season. It all kicked off with the conference fixtures against Glenalmond and Loretto and after a very strong showing, Fettes found themselves at the top of the conference table and stayed there all the way through the season to retain the Mitsubishi Eclipses Conference title (news article to follow next week!).

Next up on the fixture card was Strathallan which is always a well matched and tight affair across the age groups. It was the Senior Colts and Colts A and B who notched up notable wins and these two-year groups both had outstanding seasons - it and will be exciting watching them moving up the ranks.

In the U18 and U16 Scottish Cup both teams were disappointingly knocked out in the quarter final after giving their absolute all. They should be very proud of their efforts though, hold their heads high and learn from the experience.

It was not only the Rugby World Cup which was affected by severe weather, this year the Merchiston block unfortunately fell foul to a badly timed cold snap too. The final weekend against Dollar and George Watsons was a fitting way to end a long and busy rugby season with the teams again working hard for each other and representing the school with pride and distinction.

It’s been a privilege to again watch the power and determination of our own Zac R, Tom B, Ben A, Hamish B-S, the attacking ambition of Harry C, Elliot W and Archie G. Most importantly, it is every single boy, irrespective of team, who represents the school at this special game with grit and determination. Leadership, engagement, achievement, enjoyment and respect are the essence of rugby and all these have been evident from our player throughout this season.

The 2nd XV finished the season with a record of six wins from seven games and went out on a high with a superb performance against a strong and determined Dollar team.

*The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed Old Fettesian George Biagi in his recent match against X sporting his Fettes 1st XV  socks with pride! We hope our current Fettesians who progress to international success like George remember us just as fondly!
