The Fettes College Autumn Concert held in St Cuthbert's Church on Thursday 21st November was a wonderful panoply of musical talent, both collective and individual. The Orchestra got us off to a rousing start, delivering Elmer Bernstein’s ‘classic’ Theme from The Magnificent Seven with panache. Fettes Baroque played the Concert Grosso in G by Handel which showcased some of the skill of our more senior students, including Bethany W and Nyasha W. Two solos followed, a charismatic violin performance of Hubay’s ‘Bolero’ by Jemima O and Anya C playing the humorous, but not so easy to play, ‘Black and White Rag’ on the xylophone. The Chapel Choir rounded off the 1st half with a reprise of their Anthem from Remembrance, ‘In Flanders Fields’, the robust and weighty Te Deum in Bb by Standford, and, in a nod to St Andrew’s Day, a setting of Burns’ ‘A Red, Red Rose’ with the opening and closing solos sensitively sung by Diya E.
The Pipe Band brilliantly performed a set that included: El Paco Grande, Calm before the Storm followed by Chasing Shadows – Philip Greer and Pumpkins Fancy. The Flute Ensemble gave a lovely rendition of the Waltz of the Flowers. The Jazz Ensemble’s contribution to the programme was a classy and suitably laid-back performance of the Chuck Rio standard, Tequila. To finish, the Concert Choir sang Chilcott’s setting of Londonderry Air, The Seal Lullaby by Whitacre and Viva La Musica! By David Brunner.
Thanks to all who took part, both on the night and in preparation for such a fantastic concert.
