Astrophysics Trip to the National Space Centre

Learning outside of the classroom is so important to our academic studies at Fettes so it was with great anticipation that the Physics department took 16 students studying the IB and A Level courses to the National Space Centre in Leicester and Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire.

The intensive masterclasses were designed to complement and extend our students’ understanding of the astrophysics topics and included a fun mix of activities involving rocket building, measuring the mass of a galaxy using real data and the design of telescopes.

Between these intensive sessions the students also had the opportunity to visit the many galleries at both centres as well as the impressive Jodrell Bank radio telescopes.  It was a fantastic experience for all, extending learning, enthusing and challenging - a great way to finish a busy term.
