As is traditional, the Third Sunday in Advent saw our Candlelit Eucharist.

Our Chaplain, David McDowell said, “This atmospheric event is popular with staff, students and parents alike, and very much part of the build up to Christmas as the incarnation of Christ is represented as the light coming into the world, dispelling spiritual darkness.

Along with the light comes the music, and along with much-loved congregational carols ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and ‘Silent Night’ the choir performed ‘In the Stillness’, ‘A spotless rose’, and ‘Away in a Manger’.

The service was led by the Revd Dr Michael Hull, Principal of the Scottish Episcopal Institute, who gave an excellent sermon about the importance of the Light of Christ being seen in us (his image of the little girl asking of her babysitters ‘who am I watching today?’ will live long in the memory). He was assisted in administering communion by the chaplain and by chapel prefects Beth D and Douglas G, to whom many thanks.

The service ended with a rousing rendition of ‘It came upon the midnight clear’ whose hopeful message that one day the whole world would join the angels in joyful song sent us on our way rejoicing.

Huge thanks to Mr Appleson and the prefects for organising the candles, Mr Tully and the choir for the amazing music, Mr Bertram for his wonderful organ accompaniment, all the parents, staff and students who raised the roof with carols, Mrs Worlledge for her tireless work behind the scenes, and especially the Revd Dr Mike Hull for taking the service.
