On 17th July a group of Old Fettesians from across the generations had a fun-filled day at the annual Bisley Schools Veterans’ shoot. We enjoyed the competition of the Ashburton day and, despite some rather unpractised shooters in our midst, we achieved some excellent scores. Jamie Woodward (Mo 1991-1996) had a tremendous shoot despite some twenty years away from the sport, and Ian Sutherland (Ki 1970-1974) returned to full-bore after forty-one years to score impressively, notwithstanding the long break. Francesca Beard (PS-Da 2009-2018) received the Franks Salver award for the best Old Fettesian shoot of the day – a 48.2.
The day ended well thanks to the kindness of Mrs Rosemary Meldrum (Friend of Fettes) allowing us to use Elcho Lodge for our annual barbeque, organised by Ros Ramsay (Da 1984-1986).
The Fettes College team, having been immensely generous during the day in lending us their kit, enjoyed the delicious food with us and it was an honour to award Ellie K and Logan M the Stewart Cup and the Old Fettesian Tankard respectively for the high-standard of their shooting during the Ashburton. Thanks must also go to Sergeant Watty Burns (Staff 2010-present) for all his help with the Veterans’ shoot.
It’s always great to welcome Old Fettesians with a continued interest in shooting to our OF Shooting Club events. If you would like to attend next year’s Veterans’ shoot or any of the small-bore range days we hold at the Fettes’ Grassie Range during the school year, please feel free to get in touch at email@example.com.
