Rugby

Fettes College has a very proud rugby tradition, providing players over the years for club, university, district and national teams.

Fettes College provides boys with the competition and coaching to ensure that each individual grows in confidence and enjoys rugby at the school at the level at which they compete. As a school we work to foster pride in individual and team accomplishments. We also hope to give boys the opportunity to develop with the potential for them to compete at the highest level.

Rugby is the major game for boys in the Autumn Term. Squads are divided as follows: Bigside (1st & 2nd XVs), Littleside (3rd & 4th XV), Miniside (5th XV), Colts (A & B XVs) and Junior Colts (A&B XVs). These squads train together a minimum of three afternoons per week with a minimum of three staff attached to each squad. The state of the art indoor training facilities at the Westwoods (sports hall, aerobics studio and weights studio) along with the extensive playing fields ensures each team has every opportunity to develop.

A full fixture programme is played against both independent and state schools and clubs. In recent years tours have taken place to Spain, Holland, Ireland and Italy with the 1st XV travelling to South Africa in July 2001 for a three-week tour. The 1st XV also continues to play in the prestigious International Schools Tournament hosted by Tynedale Rugby Club. The 1st XV play in the Scottish Schools under 18 Cup, reaching the final in 2000 and in more recent times consistently reached the quarter finals of this tournament. The Colts have also had recent success in the Scottish Schools under 15 Cup winning the plate competition in 2006.
Seven a side rugby in the College continues to grow with teams entering the Merchiston, Scottish School, CCF, Goldenacre as well as the senior seven competeing in the National Schools 7 a side Tournaments held down at Rosslyn Park. Recent successes in 7s (winning Merchiston in 2000 and 2001, winning the CCF and Goldenacre tournaments in 2006) have ensured this exciting game continues to grow in popularity.

Representative honours in recent years have included players in the Integrated Edinburgh XV at U18, U16 and U19 as well as Scotland U18 side.

Recent Schools Internationalist include – William Howell (Scotland U18), Ramsey Wilson (Scotland U18), Christopher Kinloch (Scotland U18)
