Cricket at Fettes is flourishing. Enthusiasm for the game at all age groups is high, as demonstrated by the increasing number of boys who are practising in their own time. Cricket is the boys' major summer sport, with the school fielding a total of seven teams - 1st XI, 2nd XI, 3rd XI, Senior Colts A & B and Junior Colts A & B. In addition, there are fixtures at Under-10, Under-11, 2nd XI and 1st XI level in the Prep School.

Much progress has been made over recent summers. Victory has been achieved in 70% of matches across the senior school over the last two seasons, and the 1st XI claimed the Ryden Schools Cup in 2004. A number of boys have gone on to claim representative honours with East of Scotland and West of Scotland, whilst others have represented Scotland age group teams, including Sam Hunt who played for the Under-15s and Scott MacLennan, who captained the Under-17s in 2005. Indeed, 1st XI captain MacLennan, was selected in the Scotland squad for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka in February 2006.

There is real optimism that the new indoor facilities provided by Westwoods, and the opportunities for winter practice that these afford, will help to raise the standards across the school still further. They certainly played an important part in preparing the 1st XI and Development squads for the College‘s first overseas cricket tour to South Africa in Easter 2005, which was a great success. Victories were hard to come by, not surprisingly against strong regional sides, but there were some fine performances – notably the 8 wicket win for the 1st XI against a composite Western Province Cricket Club and Tygerburg Cricket Club side. The quality of the opposition cricket, the high standard of umpiring and the friendliness of the welcome, coupled with the beauty of the surroundings, all helped make it a most enjoyable trip, and one that will surely linger in the memory of all those who participated.
