Kame of Isbister

Significance:

The

Kame of Isbister, Northmavine, Shetland

Kame of Isbister is a rocky promontory located off what today is an uninhabited coast, and joined to the mainland only by a dangerous kinfe-edged ridge or "arete". Shetland has many such places, which are interpreted as eremitical monastic settlements.

The buildings of the settlement are located on the upper part of the steep seaward slope of the promontory, where they are invisible from the land. A path which formerly gave access along the arete was destroyed by a cliff-fall in 1930.
