Public Benefit

As an important part of the functions of Fettes College as a Registered Charity, we audit on an annual basis the public benefit provided by the School, a summary of which is included in the annual Trustee‘s Report and Financial Statements as submitted to the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.

Numbers of pupils educated
We educated an average of 600 pupils over the three terms during the academic year 2007-08.

Access for pupils from less affluent backgrounds
As a matter of policy, the school provides access to children from less affluent backgrounds. During the year 2006-7, we provided bursary and scholarship grants at a total cost of £1.36m to 31% of our pupils. These awards, based on parental need, enable the school to maintain its social character and ensure that assistance is given to talented boys and girls

Saving to the public purse
By educating 400 UK-resident pupils in the independent sector we have saved the public purse an amount estimated at £2.5m in the year 2006-7.

Local economy
By educating >100 non-resident students we estimate that we contributed around £2.8 m to the local economy. In addition our operating expenditure of £8 m includes £5 m on salaries for 280 staff, much of which goes into the local economy.

Care and Welfare
Fettes provides services (residential boarding, occasional boarding, pastoral care etc) which are needed by society (e.g., UK parents living abroad, single parents, busy professionals, families with difficult circumstances).
