Prep Netball season begins!
The first netball fixture of the season was against St. Mary’s in Melrose. The U11’s and U9’s were very excited at the prospect of travelling to Melrose on a coach and experiencing their host’s wonderful tea!
The U9’s, with only one practice under their belts, stepped on the court with apprehension. They stuck to their opposition and tried desperately hard to defend their goal. At half time, the score was 1-1 and the play was relatively even. However, in the second half, St. Mary’s scored 2 in a row making Fettes girls very nervous. The U9’s responded with determined play and the two Catherine’s worked hard to score 2 goals to give a draw. The team were pleased with their first result and “man of the match” went to Catherine M.
The U11A’s were keen to match their successful hockey season and went into their first game with real determination. The ball was passed around the team and the opposition had to work hard to defend their goal. At half time, Fettes had scored 6 goals to 0 which gave the U11A team a real boost. In the second half, the ball was quickly passed into the shooting circle and Carmen and Annabel scored 4 more goals. However, St. Mary’s fought back and in the space of a short time, managed to score 5 goals! The final score was 10-5 to Fettes. “Men of the match” were given to Lucie and Rosie for their great passing skills and getting the ball quickly to the shooters.
U11B’s went into the match nervously as their team was less structured and they had had very little practice together. However, this did not prevent the girls from giving their all and Ella and Ruby displayed some strong defensive work. In the centre of the court, Catriona, Elise and Alice worked hard to get the ball down the court to the shooters but their opposition was too strong and the final score was 0-11. Not wanting to feel too disappointed, the team travelled home with lots of ideas on how to improve!
