Political Society Evening

Pol society

On Thursday evening the Political Society enjoyed an excellent talk by Professor Richard English, Director of the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at St Andrew’s university. Putting his argument in the context of the Northern Ireland conflict, which is studied by some of our A level historians, Professor English gave a fascinating explanation of seven ways in which a democratic society should attempt to deal with terrorism, including the prioritisation of intelligence over military force, the co-ordination of different arms of the state, and adhering to the rule of law.

There were many questions after the talk and over the cheese afterwards, and Professor English complimented the school on how enthusiastic and good-natured the pupils were. This was an excellent opportunity to hear from an award-winning contemporary historian and political analyst whose message was conveyed with flair.
