Entertaining the Jesters

Squash News

Fettes Fives courts played host this weekend to the Jesters, a touring team of experienced Fives players from all corners of the UK. The highlight of the weekend was the Edinburgh Schools Select Tournament in which the best six Edinburgh schoolboys were each paired up with a Jester.

After 3 hours of high quality and almost non-stop competition, Alasdair G came runner-up in a very strong field. The match was followed by a delicious and much-needed buffet supper served in the Dining Hall, to which players and parents were invited.

On Sunday morning, intrepid Fettesians from all age groups (Junior Colts, Colts and Seniors) ventured into temperatures of minus 4 to take on opposition on average around 3 times their age. The Jesters were grateful for the warmth offered by the new heating system and were very complimentary about the quality of Fives on offer. In fact, for the first time in many years, Fettes’ first pair (William T and Nikita K) won a game against much more experienced and stronger opposition.

All in all this was a fabulous weekend during which a minor sport came to the fore and Fettesians were given the opportunity to play against and learn from some outstanding players. Many thanks to Frank Akerman of the Jesters for organising the event and to the catering staff for an excellent supper.
