Chemistry Masterclass

carrington chemistry news

On the 24th Of January, four Chemistry students (Nick R, Beth F, Enzo M and Strathan C) travelled to St Andrews University to embark upon a Chemistry Masterclass.

The day started with a lecture on Zeolite Chemistry ranging from their use in washing powders to dyes. We engaged in four different practical experiments ranging from a synthesis of a Heterocycle to the formation of benzoin which we then had the opportunity to analyse using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry.

Overall the day in St Andrews gave us great insight into what university life would be like as a Chemist. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to discover whether Chemistry was a career path we wished to pursue and it allowed us to further our knowledge of chemical techniques.
