Pipe Band Tour to Hong Kong, March 2010

Fettes College Pipes and Drums will return to Hong Kong in 2010 where the main focus of the tour will coincide with the annual Hong Kong 7s rugby tournament, where they will play in both the prematch entertainment and the parade of teams. The British forces obviously had a long history there, and as such the Pipes and Drums are very well received amongst both the native and expatriate communities.

We are delighted to report that the Pipe Band Fundraising Dinner, held on Saturday 28 November, was a tremendous success and we raised almost £12,000, easily exceeding our goal of £10,000.

The funds raised at the dinner will be used to assist pupils who need additional support in order to join the tour.  We would like to thank all of those who supported the dinner, with a special thank you to Mrs Myzak-Douglas for all of her hard work and enthusiasm.

Goal £11,000          Raised £22,000

Scholarships and Bursaries

Each spring, the Headmaster writes to Old Fettesians, parents and friends seeking support for the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund. During the year 2008-09 donors contributed £130,000 to the Fund, which is a most welcome addition. Currently, 20% of our pupil body receive various levels of financial assistance, but due to the global recession we are experiencing greater demand for the funds we have available from the College’s Endowment Fund.

From January 2009 all Fettes College scholarships automatically cover 10% of the fees, and parents of any successful scholarship winner may apply for further financial support through a means-test. Current Fettes College Scholarships awarded:

  • General Scholarships are for those who demonstrate high ability and potential in one subject or in a group of related subjects.
  • Music Scholarships are available to instrumentalists, orchestral players and singers.
  • Piping Scholarships are available to those who demonstrate an appropriate standard.
  • Art Scholarships are awarded to candidates who have a special interest in and a genuine commitment.
  • All-Rounder Awards are available to candidates who possess impressive all-round ability consisting of good academic potential and motivation coupled with other welldeveloped qualities and skills, such as leadership, responsibility, sense of service, sporting ability, music, art, drama and personality.
  • Bursaries are available to the holder of any scholarship through a means-test, and can cover up to the full value of the fees. Bursary awards are reviewed annually.
