Campaign News

The Annual Fund provides immediate support for the most urgent and important areas of student life at Fettes College.  With the generous support of Old Fettesians, parents and friends we are able to secure the inspirational education and academic excellence that Fettes College is renowned for.

The strength of the Annual Fund is that every single contribution – however small – helps us to fund projects not covered by the school fees:

  • 70% of our donors have made gifts of £100 or less
  • Donors range in age from 17 to 96 years old!
  • 15% of this year’s donors have made donations for at least three consecutive years.

The impact of the Annual Fund has supported many areas of the school during the last twelve months, and, throughout this website you will read about projects that would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors.

In 2008-09 we are seeking support for the following projects:

Wherever the School needs it most

Unrestricted donations to the Fettes Foundation allow the Governors to direct the funds where the School needs it most and for projects not included in the College’s budget.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships and Bursaries will always remain as a priority within our fundraising efforts.  1 in 5 of our student body is supported wholly or in part through the Endowment Fund, resulting in £1 million being awarded each year for Scholarships and Bursaries.  The £5 million Endowment Fund produces an annual income of £220,000 and in 2007/08 an additional £140,000 was raised.
In 2008-09 we aim to raise an additional £200,000 to support Scholarships and Bursaries.

Refurbishment of the Scholars / Old Library

Scholars Library Old Library

The Old Library is the College’s primary reception room and is currently used for all Governors Meetings, Receptions, exams, as well as for most of the Society gatherings when eminent speakers are invited to the School.  While the Library is no longer used as a Scholars Study Room, as it once was, it contains a wonderful selection of books and commands an unparalleled view of many major landmarks of Scotland’s capital city.  The magnificent woodwork in the Library was recently restored but the furniture, flooring and lighting are in dire need of improvement.
Estimated cost: £50,000   Funds raised: £18,000

Renovation of the Science Block

Science Labs Modern Science Labs

The Science Block was opened by the Queen Mother in 1970 and although the building is still sound, some of the laboratories are in need of modernisation.  Renovation began in 2006, with a small laboratory being transformed into a free flowing teaching room.  In 2007 the biology lab SF3 and the chemistry lab SF4 were refitted with modern benches, cabinets, fume cupboards, Smart boards and projectors.  We would like to continue upgrading more laboratories.
The 3 renovated laboratories cost £200,000

Restoration of the Chapel seating

Chapel 1880 Chapel

Chapel is the heart of the school and is used on a daily basis during term time, being the only occasion that brings all senior students together regularly, and prep students each Saturday.  As the school roll increases more seating capacity is needed.  In addition, the pews are in need of restoration and repair as the wood is deteriorating and splitting.
Estimated cost: £50,000

Phase Three of the Master Plan

Interior Phase Three

Fettes College has invested £22 million in school facilities over the last 8 years.  In order for the final phase of the Master Plan to be realised – new facilities for Music, Art and Drama, and, new classrooms for Humanities, Modern Languages and Mathematics – the Foundation needs to raise the funds.  This development is crucial in securing the long-term future of the College and in ensuring that Fettes continues to be one of Britain’s leading independent schools.
Estimated cost: £25 million
