Ralph Hughes
Head of History of Art
My first degree was in History of Art and my second in the History of Ideas. I enjoy and value art as an aesthetic experience but I also view it as a starting point for the study and exploration of a whole range of intellectual and cultural endeavours – for example, the study of French Impressionism can’t really be isolated from some consideration of 19th century technology, politics and poetry.
I don’t believe in the strict division between the Arts, the Sciences and the Humanities: I like to make connections across disciplines and, for that reason, enjoy coordinating the International Baccalaureate Theory of Knowledge course as well as Sixth Form Critical Thinking. I find teaching – and learning – at Fettes challenging and rewarding.
