Rugby

Fettes College has a very proud rugby tradition, providing players over the years for club, university, district and national teams.

Competition and coaching

We provide boys with the competition and coaching to ensure each individual grows in confidence and enjoys rugby at the school at the level at which they compete. As a school we work to foster pride in individual and team accomplishments. We give boys the opportunity to develop with the potential for them to compete at the highest level.

Training squads

Rugby is the major game for boys in the Autumn Term. Squads are divided as follows: Bigside (1st & 2nd XVs), Littleside (3rd & 4th XVs), Senior Colts (under 16), Colts (A & B XVs) and Junior Colts (A&B XVs). These squads train together a minimum of three afternoons per week with a minimum of three staff attached to each squad.

State-of-the-art facilities

The state-of-the-art indoor training facilities at the Westwoods (sports hall, aerobics studio and weights studio) along with the extensive playing fields ensures each team has every opportunity to develop.

Challenging fixtures

A full fixture programme is played against both independent and state schools and local clubs. In recent years tours have taken place to Spain, Holland, Ireland and Italy with the 1st XV travelling to South Africa, and in July 2008 travelling to Chile and Argentina for a very successful three-week tour.

Nail-biting final

The 1st XV play in the Scottish Schools under-18 Cup, reaching the final in 2000 and going one better in 2008 when the team won a nail-biting final at Murrayfield in front of 5500 very noisy and colourful spectators.

Exciting tournaments

Seven-a-side rugby in the College continues to grow in the Spring Term with teams entering the Merchiston, Scottish School, CCF, Goldenacre as well as the senior seven competing in the National Schools 7-a-side Tournaments held down at Rosslyn Park. Recent successes in 7s (winning Merchiston in 2000, 2001, and 2007, winning the CCF and Goldenacre tournaments in 2006) have ensured this exciting game continues to grow in popularity.
