Hockey

Hockey at Fettes is played by girls in the Winter Term and by boys in the Spring Term. Both 1st XI teams are usually involved in District or Scottish level Cup/Plate competitions each season.

Competitive matches

The teams train four times a week and play competitive matches against other schools and clubs. We run regular coaching and training sessions for both goalkeepers and outfield players and the players are encouraged to have a sound working knowledge of The Rules of Hockey.

Achievements

The girls‘1st XI are holders of the Apis Cup. At District level, they reached the semi-final of the East District 1st XI tournament in October 2009 and they won the East District Plate in January 2009. The boys’ 1st XI were narrowly beaten by penalty strokes in the final of SHU Schools Cup in March 2009.

Levels of play

A number of pupils play competitively in club teams in the National and District Leagues and our top players are selected for East teams and participate in Inter-District competition in all age groups from U14 up to U18. We also currently have players participating in U16 and U18 National training squads.

Touring

The Hockey Teams frequently undertake UK and international tours. Senior School teams have travelled to Paris, Holland, Ireland, Barcelona, South Africa, Japan and Australia. A group of 37 girls were in South Africa in August 2007 for a ten day pre-season tour. The next overseas girl’s tour is planned for August 2011.

Our Staff

The coaching staff are encouraged to attend coaching and umpiring courses and gain qualifications recognized by the governing body in both.

Specialist hockey coaches

Fettes also employs specialist hockey coaches to support the players and the internal coaching staff. From September, Spanish coach Gepo Torrens Poch will be joining us.
