Elite Athlete Programme

For those Fettes students with a special talent for Sport, we have introduced the Elite Athlete Programme.

Specialist training

The Programme ensures that talented sports men and women receive the specialist training they require to realise their potential. Given the excellent facilities and dedicated coaching at Fettes College, it is clear to see why we enjoy sporting success with many students distinguishing themselves at District, National, and International level in various different disciplines.

The Elite Athlete Programme has four core strands:

The Sixth Form Elite Programme

The aim of this Programme is to meet the performance goals of the athlete’s specific sport. Each athlete is closely monitored by the Elite Athlete Co-ordinator during their three timetabled lessons per cycle. This forms the basis of a structured Strength and Conditioning Programme and personal profile for each individual. Performance and lifestyle guidance is also provided, focusing on areas such as nutrition and goal setting.

Other areas covered in Elite Athlete Programme

  • Fitness testing and retesting
  • Periodisation
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Video analysis
  • Injury rehab and prevention

The Middle School Elite Programme

Athletes work twice a week as a group being introduced to SAQ (speed, agility and quickness), simple plyometric training techniques, body movement and conditioning drills. Performance and lifestyle guidance is again provided, specific to individual needs.

1. Senior Squads Elite Programme

In the term prior to competition, senior 1st team squads undergo a pre-season training process. This involves one practical session and one conditioning session each week. These sessions will encourage team work and discipline through a structured programme.

2. Prep School Elite Programme

The aim is to provide specialist training for those pupils in First and Second Forms identified as having a general athletic talent or who are high performers in a given sport. Narrative information is delivered to the group prior to the workout and it is hoped that the pupils will develop a better understanding of the basic principles of training. Circuits play a great part in these sessions, and these are designed to include exercises for all components of fitness. In addition, the group perform a second session of interval based training of short and long repetitions, fartlek and continuous running
