Government and Politics
For those interested in careers in the media, law, public administration, Europe, and, obviously, politics, this is a very useful and interesting course.
Looking at British Government
In the AS year, we focus on the British system of government, looking at issues such as:
- What does a minister do, and is this different from an MP?
- How can we influence politics?
- Is the UK democratic, and how could we improve it?
- What is Europe for?
- What was the impact of Tony Blair?
Political philosophy
For A2 we focus on political philosophy through the eyes of the major ideological traditions, including
- Could anarchism ever work, or would liberalism be better?
- Why are some socialists revolutionary?
- Is nationalism destructive?
- Is feminism a coherent idea?
- How can The Lion King teach us about conservatism?
Course Assessment
The course is assessed by four written examinations, two at the end of each year. It is an ideal subject to take alongside History, Geography, Economics, English or Modern Languages, but many combinations are possible.
Fettesians taking Government & Politics here often go on to study it at university, including at Oxbridge and in the USA.
