English

The English Department at Fettes College seeks to provide every pupil with a comprehensive, stimulating and successful education in all aspects of English Language and Literature.

A popular subject

English is a very popular subject with more than 120 pupils choosing to study English in the Sixth Form either (at A Level or IB). All pupils study English until they are 16, with most taking GCSEs in the two distinct disciplines of English and English Literature. A small number tackle Standard Grade English.

Strong results

  • 88% A*-B at GCSE since 2001;
  • 79% A/B at A Level since 2001;
  • 63% 6/7 at IB since first exams in May 2008.

Debating and public speaking

There is a great deal more to English at Fettes than simply preparing for exams. Debating and public speaking are thriving throughout the school.

Creativity is key

We hold creative writing classes and regular competitions; there is also a lively programme of author visits (bringing writers like Keith Gray, Simon Armitage, Christopher Brookmyre and Nicola Morgan to Fettes).

Going beyond the classroom

A long-established Shakespeare Society meets to read and discuss Shakespeare's plays. We also run theatre visits and study tours to Edinburgh, Stratford, London and the Lake District.
