On the first day of the Easter holiday the Pipes & Drums travelled to Hong Kong for its second major overseas trip. An intensive first weekend saw the band perform at the Ladies Sevens Competition, the Fettes Gathering in Jardine House, Hong Kong Football Club and at the International Sevens at Hong Kong Stadium where, in addition to providing music on the concourse, the band took part in the March Past, leading the Scotland team and obviously inspiring them to go on to win the plate competition.

In addition to the many shopping opportunities R&R included visits to Ocean Park, Lamma Island (by junk to celebrate John Lang’s birthday in style with the Scotland team), Star Ferry Harbour tour, Stanley Market, Stanley Military Cemetery, The Peak and the HK Museum of History.

The final three days of the tour saw the band performing on the ice rink (carpeted!) at Festival Walk, the Noonday Gun, Festival Walk, The Repulse Bay and Hong Kong Country Club.

The 34-strong band was in excellent form throughout the trip and the pupils were outstanding ambassadors for Fettes. The tour party was led by Mr Gillespie, assisted by PM Rafferty, Mr Walker, Mrs Campbell, Dr Henderson and Mr McSkimming. Our grateful thanks go to The Old Fettesian Association and the Army in Scotland Trust for their support for the tour, to the Thrift Shop for funding a set of new white shorts for the band, to so many friends, parents and OFs in Hong Kong who made us feel so welcome and particularly to John and Bernadette Lang, and Keith and Teresa Grant, without whose tremendous help, enthusiasm and hospitality the tour would not have been possible. We hope that the photographs will give you a flavour of an amazing trip.
