'Biology' means the 'science of life' and is the study of living organisms and their interactions with their environment. The youngest of the three sciences, Biology as a field of study emerged from an amalgamation of natural history and medicine. It has since expanded into a plethora of specialist disciplines including Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Microbology, Physiology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Zoology, Botany, Ecology, Biomedical sciences and Genetics to name just a few. As well as providing a good understanding of the scientific method and a solid foundation for the study of Biology, Medicine and Veterinary science in tertiary education, Biology also provides us with an understanding and appreciation of the world around us. With advances in medicine, biochemical and genetic engineering, it is more important than ever to ensure the public's understanding of Biology together with raising awareness of the implications and allow development of infomed opinions. For more information on careers in Biology and study at a higher level visit the web pages of the Royal Society and the Institute of Biology.
