Caithness has a mainly rocky shoreline but breaks in the cliffs occur to form the main bays at Keiss, Freswick, Dunnet and Reay. Here fine sandy beaches are developed, backed by dune systems. These coastal embayments preserve important records of sea level change and of prehistoric and historic storms.
