Cross Country
Longer distance running takes many forms at Fettes. On an informal basis there is the School Running Club which takes place on Monday and Wednesday lunch times in the Michaelmas and Easter Terms. The club takes advantage of an excellent 10km course round the cycle paths of Edinburgh. This course is also the setting for the School's biggest running event of the season, the Fettes charity run. Organised by Mr Welsh, Housemaster of Moredun House, over two thirds of the school compete in 5km, 10km and half marathon distance races. In 2007, the funds raised, circa £15,000, were donated to The Angus Lawson Memorial Trust (www.almt.org).
During the Easter Term, Cross Country is offered as a games option. Runners will train three times a week, often going out on further runs by themselves, in the build up to a series of inter-school competitions. The climax to the season is the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships, held in Irvine. 2007 was a year to be remembered for Fettes; we took a number of runners over to the competition who achieved a series of remarkable feats. Marcus C, entered in the Junior Boys Competition, finished seventh in a field of over 200 and qualified for the British Championships. Perhaps the highlight of the day was the Senior Girls Team Event where Fettes College finished in first place to claim the National Trophy.
