Cricket

Cricket flourishes at Fettes. The enthusiasm for the game throughout the school is tangible, and very encouraging. We are investing in all areas of our coaching programme, evidenced most recently by the acquistion of an outdoor six lane practice area, to go with our indoor four lane facility in Westwoods Health Club. The senior school regularly turns out seven teams, with three senior elevens, plus Colts and Junior Colts A and B teams. In the prep school we again run three ‘senior’ elevens, plus age group teams at u11 and u9 levels. We aim for all of our cricketers to represent the school at some stage in their cricket careers at Fettes, and we actively encourage boys to play club cricket where possible while at school. A steady stream go on to district and international recognition, and we are proud of the fact that a high percentage of our cricketers continue playing the game when they leave Fettes – indeed we regard this as an aim in itself. Our coaches are highly experienced, motivated and share a feel for the game, the way it should be played and taught, and have a deep understanding of their young players.

Boys who play will have a minimum of three sessions per week (four for 1st and 2nd XI players). Incorporated in these are a planned programme of fixtures against a range of opponents, designed to stretch our top teams while also attempting to provide the depth to allow all our players to gain match experience.

Our 1st XI has an annual festival at the end of term, where we cross swords with The Leys (Cambridge), Monkton Combe (Bath) and St.Paul’s (London), and overseas tours are very much on the agenda, with our most recent an excellent trip to Cape Town in 2005, with over thirty boys of different ages. Indeed we strive to provide every opportunity for our most talented players to maximise their talent, while seeking to provide a meaningful learning experience for all our boys, especially those new to, or unfamiliar with the game.
