ICT

The Fettes College network allows wired connection to the school network from every classroom at Fettes and from all of the Boarding Houses. In addition, every classroom and House has wireless access to the school network. Every pupil who has his or her own laptop - and this now includes all students - can connect via wireless to the network - anywhere, anytime!

The network resources are growing steadily. We have quick and easy 10 Mbs broadband internet access to teaching materials and to information. This access is changing the way that we teach and learn because we can all access up to the minute materials about a host of topics. Although the content and quality of web sites can be variable, pupils are increasingly directed towards useful sites by their teachers and we now have a growing web of intranet resources. Access to undesirable sites is made difficult by our web filters.

ICT skills at Fettes are developed predominantly through teaching and learning. As the use of ICT grows in each subject, so we move towards a seamless interface between subject and ICT tools. There are basic skills in ICT that still need to be taught, however, and this process begins in the Prep School on the school network. The youngsters produce a range of vibrant project write-ups, including our excellent web news section. The Third Form all receive instruction in the use of their own laptops at the start of the Autumn Term. All 3rd Form pupils also receive dedicated training in ICT through the medium of Business Studies and through the application of ICT across the curriculum. In 4th Form we certify these basic skills in the IAM Intermediate Award in ICT. We also extend the range of skills in areas including desk top publishing, image manipulation and web site design. We intend that all students will leave Fettes with a very sound awareness of the skills and possibilities of ICT, confident in their ability to use rapidly-changing styles of ICT at university and in their careers.
