English as a Foreign Language

Fettes prides itself on welcoming pupils from throughout the world.  Around 30% of our pupils have their homes overseas; about half British expatriates and the rest  of other nationalities.

For our foreign pupils we offer expert tuition from specialist teachers, Mrs. Jane Palfery B.A., M.A., PGCE (Head of Department); Mrs. Isobel MacKenzie, M.A., PGCE, RSA Cert TEFL.

Pupils are taught English  in small classes until their standard of English  is good enough for them to have all their lessons with native speakers.  The lessons often take place when other pupils are being taught French.

Our strong preference is that all foreign pupils should achieve a good, basic understanding of English before joining Fettes.  We are willing, however, to consider applications from young intelligent pupils with little knowledge of English.  Under these circumstances we make arrangements for such pupils to receive intensive courses in the Prep. School to enable them to integrate as quickly as possible both socially and academically.

Universities in English speaking countries require a recognised qualification in English for entrance.  At Fettes we are very experienced and successful in preparing our overseas  students for their external examinations.

Tuition charges  The charge made for four or more lessons per week of EFL tuition is    £340 per term.  If a particular pupil requires fewer lessons, the cost is adjusted in proportion to the number of lessons arranged.
