Moredun House
The Moredun men have designed and developed their own website and update a regular news 'blog' to keep everyone up-to-date with Moredun news. Do visit this site to get a good idea of what we have been doing: Visit the boys' web site
Moredun House was built as part of the original School foundation in 1870. It is one of the oldest boys boarding Houses and situated closest to the main school buildings. Set amongst the trees south of the Green Walk it has a uniquely self-contained atmosphere and this helps to engender a strong sense of identity in Moredun Men. Its 41 boarders and 16 day boys make up a close-knit, friendly community, in which seniors and juniors mix happily and are instinctively supportive of each other. There is a good sense of tradition, an excellent work ethic and a healthy balance with regard to academic work, sport, music and drama. The ethos is one of participation with the men of Moredun expected to involve themselves in a wide ranging number of activities, societies and sports. Moredun is a House for all: we look to celebrate achievement in any field.
Moredun men are encouraged to follow the inspirational words of Winston Churchill and to: "Never, never, never give up" and are encouraged to give their best in all they do. Academic work is, of course, a priority and the Third and Lower Sixth Forms had a clean sweep of Effort Prizes in 2008/9. We pride ourselves on combining academic success with extra-curricular participation. In House Competitions we always try to give our best and in the last academic year Moredun has won the Senior Cricket, Junior Hockey, Junior Belows Hockey, Senior Belows Hockey, Drumming and Swimming (for the ninth year in a row.) We came runners-up in both of the rugby competitions as well as the football and Junior Cricket House matches.
The Head Boy this year is Christopher Giffin, last year's Head of House which he shared with David Murphy who becomes the Head of Craigleith. This year's Head of House position is being shared again, the only Boy's House to do so. Mark Birrell will lead the House for the Winter Term. Sajan Wickramasuriya is Deputy Head of House.
Barry Welsh is the Housemaster of Moredun. He was formerly Head of Geography at Fettes. He is also a keen sportsman and mountaineer and summitted Everest in 2006. He is married to Susan who previously was Head of Art. Completing the Moredun family is Robbie, their young son and Thindu the dog. Mr Peter Jenkins is the Resident Tutor, taking particular care of the New Men of Moredun. Mrs Diane Stewart completes the team as Resident Matron.
